Gallery Court Condo Ottawa Neighbourhood Guide
Gallery Court Condo Ottawa is located in the Byward Market. The Byward Market is one of the oldest areas in the City of Ottawa. Surrounded by old and new landmarks, it is seen as the heart of the city’s downtown. As one of the most active parts of the city, most events either take place in the tiny six-block radius starting from Rideau Street or revolve around it in some way. It is bordered by Cumberland St to the East, Sussex Dr and Mackenzie Ave on the Westside.
The Byward Market contains a vast majority of Ottawa’s nightlife and entertainment. It’s the perfect place to grab a drink during happy hour or celebrate a night out with friends at any, or many, of the bars, clubs, and pubs. During the spring, summer, and fall the Market is flooded with many stands selling fresh produce, prepared food selections, clothing, flowers, and much more. Many boutiques allow for a diverse shopping selection. At the south end of the ByWard Market lies the Rideau Centre. This enclosed mall is home to more than 180 of Ottawa’s best stores and services.
Commuting to various points is fairly easy in this neighbourhood. With the Rideau Station O-Train stop right now Rideau Street, and Mackenzie King Station right around the corner, residents will have no trouble hopping on buses or trains to far off areas like Stittsville or Orleans. Its location also means a cab or an uber will never be far off. With the exception of the crowded Rideau Street, the Byward Market has been referred to as a walker’s and cyclist’s paradise. A homebody seeking to move into the area will be relieved to know that it has a fair amount of grocery stores that are not too far away. Even better, the Byward Market boasts of several specialty stores, which means you can finally make that complicated Italian dish that you couldn’t find the ingredients for. There are also several parks as well as a few libraries and a handful of elementary and secondary schools within walking distance. The Market’s central location puts it 5 minutes from Ottawa’s bus station, 5 minutes from the VIA Rail train station, and 15 minutes from the Ottawa International airport.
The Byward Market has a fairly young demographic mixing University/College students, young professionals and retirees seeking to be close to the main attractions of the city. About 40% of residents are between the ages of 20-39 and only 35% of people living In this neighbourhood are married. There is a large student population mostly because of the proximity of the University of Ottawa. In addition to this, the area is home to many of Ottawa’s homeless shelters.
